Who’s he that doth travel the woods late by night?
It is the father, his son by his side.
A-holding the little boy all in his arm,
he’s wrapped him up tightly, he’s keeping him warm.

»My son, pray tell me, what frightens you so?«
»Beholdst thou not, father, the Fairy King’s glow?
With his crown made of fire, his shimmering frock?«
»My son, this is naught but a phantom of fog.«

My lovely child, come follow me!
Most pleasant games I’ll play with thee.
The flowers are bright where the river runs down,
my mother’s got many a glistening gown.

»My father, my father, pray canst thou not hear,
the Fairy King’s promises, soft in my ear?«
»O don’t be afraid, little stupid, be calm!
’Tis naught but the wind that is shaking the elm.«

Willst thou, fairest manchild, not come and be mine?
My daughters will dress you in satin so fine.
At night, when my daughters are leading the ball
there’s laughter and singing and joy in my hall.

»O father, my father, pray canst thou not see,
the Fairy King’s daughters are smiling at me?«
»My boy, little boy, I can tell you quite sure,
’tis naught but the willows that wave by the moor.«

I love your fair features, your grace I behold,
and if you’re not willing, you’ll never grow old.

»My father, my father, he’s touching my arm!
The Fairy King’s holding me, doing me harm!«

The father a-shudders, he speeds like the wind,
a-clutching his son, never looking behind,
he reaches his home at his horse’s last breath –
but the face of his son now is shadowed by death.

bookmark_borderFace in the Ashes

It’s been a long time since you left me
Left me alone, left me to weep and cry
It’s been a long time since you left me:
You’re gone, and I’ll never know why.

But I still see your face in the ashes
and I still hear your voice in the smoke-filled cloud –
but your laughter sounds hollow
and I will not follow
your way through the veil – I won’t pass the shroud.

I wander that path down the valley
Walk down that path that often we’ve walked before
I wander that path down the valley:
It isn’t my vale anymore.

But I still see your eyes in the fire
and I still hear your call in the thunderstorm
but your gaze is all frozen,
to live I have chosen:
your hands feel so cold, and I want to keep warm.

I lay down to sleep in the evening
Lay down to sleep, lay down to wake and rise
I lay down to sleep in the evening
Your world is one step from me eyes.

And I still feel your breath on my pillow
and I still feel your hands close around my neck
but though you are still crying
as daylight is dieing:
You can take my life, but you can’t take me back

Dust is my cover,
I’m far from my lover.
Bereft of all sunlight they left me to hell.
Nobody strokes my head,
Kisses my cheeks so red.
Nobody knows that in darkness I dwell.

All sad and pathetic
I’m caged in the attic.
They’ve long since forgotten,
There’s no one to know.
They’ve locked me in a chest
But I can’t find no rest.
Where is the child that my love I may show?

She was my treasure,
A love without measure.
I was her side-kick by night and by day.
Held by her soft warm hands –
Oh, we were more than friends
Until they came and they took her away.

Her warm breath ran through me,
Her soul she gave to me.
Turning a living thing took me a while.
Though now my hands may wave
She lies down in her grave.
No one can see that my lips learnt to smile.

Days pass around me,
They’ve caged and they’ve bound me.
Once we were lovers that no one could part.
Gone is my sun that shone,
I’m here, all left alone.
My porcelain breast holds a little girl’s heart.
