bookmark_borderThe Way to Sirius

I did not cry when Mir was drowned,
not cheered the Lunar landing.
Gagarin’s just a name that suits a cat.
If alien life is ever found?
And if? The world’s not ending.
Some freaks may hope, but I don’t care for that.

But I walked the moon and I rode the rainbow,
I’ve been fishing in a Darkover stream:
Even light takes nine long years to Sirius,
nothing can outspeed a dream.

When Challenger did bust in flames,
I thought it was a horror,
but then, there’s horrors happen every day.
I don’t recall the victims names,
nor did I feel much sorrow:
With wars and hunger, space is far away.

But I’ve killed the beast and I’ve kissed the princess,
against Sauron’s evil minions fought:
Even light takes nine long years to Sirius,
nothing can outspeed a thought.

When there’s Han Solo and Picard,
why do we need a NASA?
No star can shine as brilliant as a mind:
Within my head, I travel far,
I wield my sword and phaser.
I close my eyes, some new worlds for to find.

So lets roam the stars and chase afer comets,
travel time and through space – come along!
Even light takes nine long years to Sirius,
nothing can outspeed a song.

bookmark_borderRobin Hood and the Tenor

Placido went out one summer morning
for a walk in the merry green wood.
To practise a song
that lasts twelve minutes long.
T’was there that he met Robin Hood.
Oh, it was there that he met Robin Hood.

»What fellow art though?« quoth bold Robin Hood,
»and what is this terrible noise?
In the woods far and near
all wild beasts shake with fear –
Pray don’t tell me this is your voice!
Oh, pray don’t tell me this is your voice!«

»Oh, I-hi-hi-hi a-ha-ha-ha-ham
a te-he-he-he-he-ho-nor!
And I si-hi-hi-hing
that the valleys do ring!
Now go and disturb me no more!
Oh, now go and disturb me no more!«

»That never will be«, quoth bold Robin Hood,
»my forest is no place to wail.«
He bashed Placido’s head
and the tenor was dead,
and this is the end of my tale.
Oh, and this is the end of my tale.

bookmark_borderMandola G-String Blues

There’s eight strings to my mandola,
seven of them sound so clear,
but the first string, that’s a G-string
makes a sound none stands to hear.

So I tried to trim and tune it
to the very tiniest bit.
Seven strings did sound like diamonds,
but the G-string sound like… Well, not excactly like diamonds.

There’s eight strings to my mandola,
seven of them sound so clear,
but the first string, that’s a G-string
makes a sound none stands to hear.

So I dialled 1-900-
M-A-N-D-O-L-A
but they said they couldn’t help me,
still they wanted me to pay.

There’s eight strings to my mandola,
seven of them sound so clear,
but the first string, that’s a G-string
makes a sound none stands to hear.

Next, I checked an old grimoire
and I tried a tuning spell:
Seven strings would sound like angels
but the G-String sounds like hell.

There’s eight strings to my mandola,
seven of them sound so clear,
but the first string, that’s a G-string
makes a sound none stands to hear.

Then I summoned up a demon,
he should have my soul and that,
and he smiled and turned my G-string
to an excellent A flat.

There’s eight strings to my mandola,
seven of them sound so clear,
but the first string, that’s a G-string
makes a sound none stands to hear.

And if ever I get buried
I am sure no peace I’ll find
if my stone won’t say: »That G-string
was the last string on her mind.«

There’s eight strings to my mandola,
seven of them sound so clear,
but the first string, that’s a G-string
makes a sound none stands to hear.

bookmark_borderFilkers of Cambreadth

Guitars flash, weird chords swing,
chairs have built a malformed ring
bardic circling is just great,
circle turns like a wheel of fate.
Some brave filkers sing with glee,
know that filking’s all ’bout ME
Others yet would rather die:
How Many of You Are Too Damn Shy!

They grow pale as the circle turns,
Many a cheek that blushes and burns.
Eyes are staring at the floor,
Just How Fast Can You Reach The Door!
Fleeing yet is all in vain,
It’s Filk till You’re No Longer Sane
Stop the whining, give it a try:
How Many of You Are Too Damn Shy!

There’s this phrase none wants to hear:
I Didn’t Sing For Over A Year
This Is the First I Ever Writ –
Well just try, have a go at it.
Don’t give a damn on how it sounds,
Just sing along on the circle grounds.
Make us laugh or make us cry:
How Many of You Are Too Damn Shy!

Dawn has broke, it’s still not o’er,
Some are sleeping on the floor.
Ten hours filking took their toll,
Of those who filked with heart and soul.
No one here will chop off your head,
Filk along or go to bed.
Sing your song, don’t tell us why –
How Many of You Are Too Damn Shy!

Guitars flash, weird chords swing,
Some chairs are left to form a ring
Bardic circling still is great,
Circle turns till it’s far too late
We brave filkers croak with glee,
Know that filking’s all ’bout ME,
Raise your voice and call the cry,
How Many of You Are Too Damn Shy!

Tanzt meinen Reigen, singt feideldum deideldum,

nehmt euer Laken, singt feideldum deideldum,
morgen um Mitternacht tanzen wir wieder!
– tanzt, Freunde, tanzt, eh die Sonne erwacht –
– tanzt, Freunde, tanzt, eh die Sonne erwacht –
– tanzt, Freunde, tanzt!

bookmark_borderCover of the »Let’s Filk About«

Well we’re fine Filk singers, we got golden fingers
but there’s hardly anyone who’ll know
that we sing about heroes, faeries, dragons and toads
for some laughter and some hearts that’ll glow.
You see, we’re still lacking fame, and we know who’s to blame
that there’s no groupies to scream and to shout:
For there is no getting richer if we won’t get our picture
On the cover of the »Let’s Filk About«.

Let’s Filk About – Wanna see my picture on the cover
Lets Filk About – wanna buy twelve copies for my mother
Let’s Filk About – I wanna see my smiling face
On the cover of the »Let’s Filk About«

We’ve got a keyboard that does organ cello saxophone and fog
and a guitar that was made in Japan.
We’ve learned some dirty old Swedish baroque songs,
we’d sing ballads on Cúchulainn’s ban.
We know all minor chords and even some Welsh words
so we can really stand out in a crowd.
We’d wear silk and we’d wear laces if it helped to see our faces
on the cover of the »Let’s Filk About.«

Let’s Filk About – Wanna see my picture on the cover
Lets Filk About – wanna buy twelve copies for my mother
Let’s Filk About – I wanna see my smiling face
On the cover of the »Let’s Filk About«

We sing in voices so clear and with roars you’ll fear,
we make our own songs and we know how to steal.
We’ve got a song that what written by Goethe,
we’ll sing in moods that sound just like you feel.
We’ve got some tales to tell, but there’s no fans who yell,
and when we sing, folks will rather move out.
We’ve tried make-up, we’ve tried squinting, but they still are not printing
Our cover of the »Let’s Filk About.«

Let’s Filk About – Wanna see my picture on the cover
Lets Filk About – wanna buy twelve copies for my mother
Let’s Filk About – I wanna see my smiling face
On the cover of the »Let’s Filk About«

bookmark_borderCourted by a Blackbird

I was courted by a blackbird, one evening in the spring.
When I was tuning my guitar, the bird would start to sing.
And as my song was flying, even higher flew the bird’s,
and I knew it was a love song that did not need any words …

The others started laughing, saying: »The bird is after you!«
We looked up into the trees, but no blackbird was in view.
And still as I was singing, the bird would sing along,
and when I stopped my singing, the bird would stop his song.

But then the night grew darker, my chords no more I’d see,
and I went on and sang by heart, so blackbird, sing for me!
And everyone was singing, thousand voices joined my tune,
And when we found the bird was gone, we sang to please the moon.

I was courted by a blackbird, one evening in the spring.
When I was tuning my guitar, the bird would start to sing.
And as my song was flying, even higher flew the bird’s,
and I knew it was a love song that did not need any words…
